This research project focuses on the inter-relatedness of two adverbs "qishi" and "shishishang" in terms of their semantic, discourse , and pragmatic functions. At the semantic level, the meanings of contrast and increment for these two adverbs are distinguished. At the discourse level, these two adverbs are explored with respect to their functions of topic continuity, contrastive focus and end focus. At the pragmatic level, the function of counter-expectation in particular is investigated. Pedagogically, the results of the data analysis were used to test L2 Chinese learners of different ethnic origin to compare their performance in these three linguistic levels prior to and after teaching in order to provide some pedagogical implications.
