Description

Cultivating mental health literacy (MHL) for public health professionals can help remove the factors that adversely affect population health. The purpose of the first year of this research project is 1) to understand the current status and gaps of curriculums regarding MHL of the departments of public health in Taiwan, and 2) to develop the curriculums modules of MHL in public education using the content analysis, modified Delphi method and focus group interview. The results of content analysis indicated that most of courses of public health focused on the first dimension of MHL, which is obtaining and maintaining positive mental health, and the second dimension of MHL, which is recognition of mental illnesses. However, the current courses have a limited attention on the other dimensions, which include reducing mental illness stigma, improving help-seeking efficacy, and improving help-seeking attitude. In addition, the lecture is the most common teaching strategies while the report and paper-based examination is the most common assessment method. In order to construct a curriculum with five major aspects of MHL, the present research reviewed previous studies and research projects to develop the modified Delphi questionnaire. A panel of experts and scholars were invited to participate in the modified Delphi process. After two rounds of modified Delphi survey, fourteen learning objectives and sixty-eight learning contents of the MHL curriculum were constructed. On the basis of the findings, the 18-week MHL curriculum with high consensus among students and experts was developed, which was thoroughly evaluated by means of a student focus group and an expert focus group. In the second year of this research project, the MHL curriculum in public health education constructed in the first year was used as the intervention content, and the purpose of the second year was to explore the effectiveness of MHL curriculum among undergraduates in public health. The participants were undergraduates from the department of public health among 2 universities in Taipei Metro Area,. Three waves of measures were conducted, including pre-test, post-test and six-week follow-up. The number of the participants who completed the whole tests was 48. Regarding the degree of change between the pre-test and post-test scores, the change of total MHL scores was reached a significant difference (p
