Description

Nominated by the Houzhu of Northern Qi dynasty as chief editor in 572 A.D., Zu Ting compiled encyclopedia “Xiuwendianyulan”() with the help of “Hualinpianlue”()of the Liang dynasty as the primary source. During the Northern Song dynasty, publications such as Taipingyulan, which is based on “Xiuwendianyulan”, “Yiwenleiju”()and “Wensiboyao”()replaced “Xiuwendianyulan” as the widely circulated encyclopedias, which lead to the loss of this category book. Having its included literature and historical data categorized, “Xiuwendianyulan” has made itself reader-friendly in terms of information searching and functions as an encyclopedia. Frequently employed in Japan during in the Chyusei period, in spite of the fact that the original script of “Xiuwendianyulan” was long lost, fractions of it can still be retrieved from Taipingyulan. Judging from how the extant texts were vastly scattered among various category, it is generally assumed that “Xiuwendianyulan” is used in multiple fields in Japan. As Taipingyulan expands to more than one thousand volumes while “Xiuwendianyulan” has only 360, it is rather difficult to distinguish texts of “Xiuwendianyulan” unless quoting patterns or notes were explicitly found. However in what seemed like a blind alley where no further progression could be made, the author found a loophole to provide innovative perspective. The following three literature, the scripts of “Dianyan”()and “Leilin”()that circulated in Japan and “Ryounosyuuge”(), the explanatory book of the Heian laws, all shared significant connection with “Xiuwendianyulan”. By comparing these three literature and previous Japanese reserach that referenced “Xiuwendianyulan”, this study aims to retrieve texts of “Xiuwendianyulan” that were not previously found. The recovery of the texts and the original form of “Xiuwendianyulan” also lead to further investigation into its influence on Japanese bibliography and Chyusei literature.
